Maples
Acer palmatum 'Beni maiko'
This intensely red cultivar livens up the spring landscape. Classified as a semi-dwarf, occasionally it can grow up to 23 inches a year. A multibranched, bushy tree has irregularly shaped leaves. It's leaves change through the summer, with green replacing much of hte red, though the veins remain scarlet. The name 'Beni maiko' means "red-haired dancing girl".
Acer palmatum 'Beni shishihenge'
This cultivar has lovely spring color with pinkish orange variegation which it maintains year-round. It is a slow growing tree, and if not pruned may become twiggy. It needs part shade and does quite well here in Georgia. We have personally found it to be a better growing tree compared to the whiter 'Butterfly'.
Acer palmatum 'Hanami nishiki'
This small leafed dwarf is one of the more rare forms of Japanese maple. The yellow-green spring leaves may be edged with bronze, turning to green in the summer. It is a very slow grower, only a few centimeters a year, makig it an ideal container plant. After many years, the tree can reach a height of six feet with a spread as wide. Come see our 14 year-old specimen!
Acer palmatum 'Sango kaku'
This is a MUST have for anyone desiring a Japanese maple. From its light green leaves in the Spring, to the golden foliage in Fall, it's most spectacular attribute is the red bark which appears in the Winter. Commonly call the Coral Bark Maple, it grows wonderfully in full sun, will handle afternoon shade, and is easily limbed-up to show the beautiful and graceful structure this tree holds.
Acer palmatum dissectum 'Orangeola'
An incredible dissected maple - watch every season for a new coloration! In spring its orange-red leaves lead into a darker molted green for summer. Its Fall color is red an this elegant mushroom. The specimen pictured in our garden is about 8 years old, and about three feet high by six feet wide. Full sun, but ours is in afternoon shade.
